The collection consists of mainly letters, along with some printed material and other assorted items. Most of the letters (many dating from either the early 1940s or late 1960s and early 1970s) are from other people including political figures, friends, and supporters. Subjects mentioned include World War II, the Vietnamese Conflict, the Peace Movement, and presidential election reform. There are also a few family letters, including some from Rankin written while she was traveling in the Middle and Far East during 1946 and 1947. The printed material includes clippings, magazine articles, programs, and writings by and about Rankin. Other items in the collection include photographs, political ephemera, and writings by other people.

Jeannette Pickering Rankin (June 11, 1880 – May 18, 1973) was an American politician and women's rights advocate, and the first woman to hold federal office in the United States. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from Montana in 1916, and again in 1940. Rankin graduated from the University of Montana in 1902.
